My journey with photography……..

February 2019

Hotel Life

I know this may sound crazy to some of you but at times I don’t mind the hotel life. What’s there to do besides sleep, eat, and go out and enjoy the reason why you’re there? You can relax and not worry about multitasking at home 😉

I was in San Antonio TX weekend before last. The first evening I was there I was watching TV, catching up on some reading on the iPad and charging the camera batteries. Out of nowhere I stopped and looked around the room, mainly at the desk where I was sitting. For the next two to three days my life was based from what was in the room and/or desk. Funny how I can survive on what’s in my hotel room and when I’m at home I have lots of stuff that I think I really need.

Hotel life

You don’t have to go far to find something to photograph because it’s right there in front of you (something I tell myself all the time). At this moment I grabbed my camera and lens (yes only had one) and began to document my hotel life. I know I know it still sounds crazy but it’s a good thing. Why? I’m documenting a place that I would never think of. I’m also giving myself a chance to work on parts of my photography such as depth of field or higher ISO. And as always tell a story. So if you’re ever in a slump and want to shoot NOW without going anywhere, create a project of the surroundings that you’re in.

Gear used: Fujifilm X-Pro2, and XF 27mm F2.8 lens.

Reflections and Shadows

I must admit I have been very lucky of the photographs I have been able to capture this winter. Whether it’s been photographing the countryside on a snow day or just a mixture of ice & leaves, it’s just amazing of the art they had created. But that’s the beauty of it all; you never know what you will come across.

Once again on a cold morning as I was out walking I began to notice the reflections and strong shadows from the trees. Add the sun bouncing off the mixture of ice and water I began to see some unique art. Timing is everything. Around 10-10:30AM the sun begins to open through the clouds. At times with the sun going in and out of the clouds, it was a hit-or-miss capturing the shadows. So as I was walking my laps I wasn’t for sure of what I would be able to capture. I added some patience with my time and had fun trying to find the right angles when it came to the reflections in the ice and water.

If the weather hasn’t been the way you want to shoot, give it a chance. I have done this many of times this year and don’t have any regrets. On a day where there may be frost, ice, cracked ice, water, snow, shadows, reflections, clouds, and even sunshine…and you know of a place you enjoy shooting at (or even if you don’t like the place) go out and shoot 😉

Gear used: Fujifilm X-Pro2, and XF 50MM F/2, R WR lens. My original photographs are color but I converted into black & white.
